Your website is probably losing you customers right now, and you cannot see it happen. No alarm goes off. People land and leave, and your phone just stays quiet. You assume business is slow. Often the real problem is 5 fixable things sitting on your own site.
Here is the good news. You can check all 5 yourself in about 10 minutes, right on your phone. No developer and no login required, and none of the usual jargon. Grab your phone and open your site like a stranger would, and let's go down the list.
1. It loads too slow (especially on a phone)
Speed is the silent killer. If a page takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, 53 percent of visitors just leave (Think with Google, 2026). Half your traffic, gone, before they read a word. They do not email you to complain. They tap back and call the next guy.
Check it in under 2 minutes. Open your site on your phone using cell data, not your home wifi. That is what most of your customers are on. Count the seconds until the page is actually usable, not just starting to appear. For a harder number, run your address through Google PageSpeed Insights, which is free, and look at the mobile score.
The fix. Most slowness comes from giant uncompressed images and a bloated theme stuffed with plugins you do not use. Compress your photos and cut the dead plugins, then move to decent hosting. If your site is more than a few years old and nobody has touched the guts of it, the speed problem is usually baked in and worth a rebuild.
2. Nobody can tell what you do in 5 seconds
Here is a brutal test, and it matters more than anything on this list. A first-time visitor should know what you do, who you do it for, and where you are, inside 5 seconds. If they have to hunt, they are already gone.
Too many small business sites open with a vague slogan like "Excellence you can trust" over a stock photo of a handshake. That tells a visitor nothing. It does not say you are a plumber in Fargo, or a bookkeeper for contractors, or a bakery that does wedding cakes.
Check it in under 2 minutes. Pull up your homepage and read only what shows before you scroll. Better yet, show it to someone who does not know your business, for 5 seconds, then hide it. Ask them what you do and who you serve. If they stumble, your headline is failing.
The fix. Rewrite your headline so it is plain and specific. Say the thing. "Licensed electricians serving Bismarck homes and small businesses" beats any clever tagline. Put your city in it. Clarity wins customers and cleverness loses them, every single time.
3. It is hard to contact you, or there's no clear next step
People came to your site to do one of 2 things. Call you, or book you. If either one takes more than a tap or 2, you are leaking money. A phone number buried in a footer, a contact form 4 clicks deep, no button that says what to do next, all of it costs you jobs.
Check it in under 2 minutes. On your phone, pull up your homepage and try to contact yourself. Is there a tap-to-call button right at the top? Can you book or request a quote without scrolling forever or digging through menus? Time it. If it takes you, the owner, more than 10 seconds to find how to reach you, a stranger will not bother.
The fix. Put your phone number in the header as a real tap-to-call link, not plain text. Add one clear button that repeats on every page, something like "Get a Free Quote" or "Book Now." Decide the single action you want visitors to take, then make that action obvious and impossible to miss.
4. It was not really built for phones
More than 60 percent of web traffic now comes from phones (Statista, 2026), and for a local service business it runs even higher, because people search "near me" the moment they need you. If your site was built for a desktop and merely shrunk down, those visitors fight tiny text and buttons they cannot tap, and the whole page scrolls sideways, so most of them give up fast.
Check it in under 2 minutes. Just use your site on your phone for a minute. Do you have to pinch and zoom to read anything? Do buttons sit so close together you fat-finger the wrong one? Does the page scroll sideways when it should not? Each one of those is a visitor rage-tapping their way off your site.
The fix. Your site needs to be genuinely responsive, meaning it reshapes itself for a phone instead of just shrinking. Text should be readable without zoom, buttons should be big enough for a thumb, and nothing should spill off the edge. If yours fails the one-minute phone test, no quick patch fixes it. It needs to be rebuilt mobile-first.
5. There's no proof you're the real deal
This is the one Christian business owners skip most, usually out of humility, and it quietly sinks everything else. A stranger does not know you. They do not know if you are honest, or even real. If your site has no reviews and no real photos, nothing that says other people trusted you and were glad they did, you are asking them to take a cold leap of faith, and most will not.
Stock photos make it worse. A visitor can smell a fake smiling model from the first glance, and it makes them wonder what else on the page is fake.
Check it in under 2 minutes. Look at your homepage as a doubter. Can you find a single customer review or testimonial? Are the photos actually your work and your own team, or did they come from a stock library? Is there anything, a logo, a certification, a years-in-business line, that proves you are established?
The fix. Add 3 to 5 real reviews where people can see them, pulled straight from Google if you have them there. Swap stock images for real photos of your work and your actual team. Show the proof. This ties straight to our whole approach at Before Kings, which is proof, not promises. Your site should carry the same posture.
"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16, NASB)
Good work shown plainly is not pride. It is how a stranger decides to trust you.
Run the 10-minute check, then go deeper
That is the whole list. Grab your phone, walk your own site as a first-time visitor, and be honest about what you find. Slow load, unclear headline, hidden contact, broken on mobile, no proof. Most small business sites miss on at least 2 of these, and fixing even one usually moves the needle.
