Your Customers Stopped Googling. They're Asking ChatGPT Now.

More people ask ChatGPT and AI assistants for recommendations than ever before. Here is what that means for your business, and how to be one of the names they hear back.

Ten years ago, a customer who needed what you sell opened Google, typed a few words, and scrolled a page of blue links until one looked right. That habit is breaking, and it is breaking fast.

In February 2026, ChatGPT reached about 900 million weekly users, up from 400 million a year earlier (OpenAI). Google's own AI answers, the ones that sit at the top of the page, now reach more than 2 billion people a month. Your customer still has the same question they always had. They are just asking a different thing to answer it, and that thing talks back in plain sentences with a short list of names.

Here is the part that should get your attention. When someone asks for a good plumber, a trustworthy accountant, or a contractor who does epoxy floors, the assistant does not hand them 10 links to sort through, it gives them 2 or 3 names with a reason to trust each one. You are either in that short list or you are invisible, and there is no page 2 to climb onto anymore.

The search your customer runs now looks nothing like the old one

The old search rewarded the business that ranked tenth, because a patient customer kept scrolling, and the new one does not reward that at all. A large share of searches already end without a single click to any website. SparkToro's 2024 study found that 58.5% of US Google searches ended without a click, and by early 2026 their follow-up put the number past two in three. When an AI answer sits at the top of the page, the drop is steeper still, with several studies measuring organic click-through falling around 60% on those queries.

Read that plainly. The customer got their answer inside the search itself, took a name or two, and moved on without ever seeing the list your SEO fought to rank in. The question did not go away. Only the click did.

Why this matters more for a business that does its work as unto the Lord

Scripture says a city set on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14). The whole point of good work done faithfully is that people see it and are drawn to it. Excellent craft, honest pricing, a team that keeps its word, none of that helps the customer who never finds you. If the tool your customer trusts has never heard your name, your light is under a basket, and the family down the road hires someone who cut more corners than you ever would.

This is not about chasing a trend. We do not build that way. It is about making sure the business you have built with real care is actually reachable by the people looking for it, in the place they are now looking.

What AI actually sees when it decides who to name

AI assistants do not pick names out of the air. They lean on a handful of signals, and most businesses have never tended a single one of them. The data here is worth sitting with.

SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found that on ChatGPT, only 1.2% of business locations ever get recommended. On Perplexity it was 7.4%, on Gemini about 11%. Compare that to Google's old local 3-pack, which showed roughly 36% of locations. The field of businesses an AI will say out loud is far narrower than the one Google would list. Narrow fields reward the prepared.

Three signals do most of the work:

Your information has to be right and the same everywhere. For local businesses, data accuracy is the single most impactful factor in whether AI names you. Your business name, address, phone, hours, and services need to match across your site, your Google Business Profile, and every directory that mentions you. The same study found business profile accuracy was only about 68% on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Half the field is tripping over its own shoelaces.

Other people have to vouch for you. When ChatGPT pulls a recommendation, roughly 58% of its citations come from business websites, 27% from mentions on other sites, and 15% from directories (Big Eye Agency analysis of ChatGPT Search). It wants to see your name in places you do not control, a local news mention, a review platform, an industry directory. One good reputation, spread across the open web, is what an AI reads as trust.

Your reviews have to be strong. Locations that ChatGPT recommends average 4.3 stars. Reviews are no longer just social proof for a human reading them. They are a signal the machine counts before it ever repeats your name.

The window is open, and it will not stay open

Most of your competitors are doing nothing about this. One 2026 report found that 84% of brands are not yet tracking whether AI even mentions them. That is the opportunity. The business owner who gets his data clean, earns honest reviews, and gets cited in the right places now will be the name the assistant says for years, while everyone else is still arguing about whether this is real.

"Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings" (Proverbs 22:29). Skilled work has always traveled by reputation. The reputation just moved into a new room, and most people have not walked in yet.

Where to start this week

You do not need to overhaul anything to begin. Three moves cover most of the ground:

  1. Ask the major AI assistants the exact question your best customer would ask, in your town, for your service, then write down who gets named. If it is not you, now you know.
  2. Check that your contact details and hours read identically on your website and your Google Business Profile. Fix the mismatches first, because they cost you the most for the least effort.
  3. Ask your three happiest customers for an honest review this month. Not a campaign, just three. Do it again next month.

None of this replaces a well-built website or real SEO. It sits on top of both. The businesses that win the next few years are the ones that are easy for a person to find on Google and easy for a machine to recommend in a sentence.
