Claude Duet: The AI That Messages You First, and Why Business Owners Will Want It

Claude Duet is Anthropic's new app that keeps an eye on your email, calendar and business apps, sends you a short brief each morning, and does the legwork while you're out on a job. Here's what it is, how it works, who can get it and what to watch out for.

Every AI tool you've tried works the same way. You open it, type a question and read the answer. Then it sits there until you come back.

Claude Duet doesn't wait. It's a new app from Anthropic, the company that makes Claude. It keeps an eye on your email, your calendar and the business apps you connect, then messages you when something needs you. You can hand it a job by text. Or by voice memo from the truck. It keeps working after you put your phone away. And it checks with you before it does anything that matters.

Anthropic opened it on October 21, 2026, as a "research preview," their name for an early version that's still being tested. They built it, in their words, for "professionals and small business owners with more on their plates than they can track."

Everything in this post comes from Anthropic's own pages, linked at the bottom, so you can check any of it.

The quick facts

  • What it is: a phone app (iPhone and Android, plus claude.ai on a computer) where Claude works as your assistant, not just a chat window.
  • Who can get it: people in the US on Claude's paid Pro or Max plans. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.
  • How: by waitlist. Invitations go out in waves.
  • Extra cost: none during the preview. It's included in Pro and Max.
  • Big catch: it doesn't work with Microsoft 365 yet. If your email lives in Outlook, it can't read it for now.

What is Claude Duet?

The tech word for it is an "agent." That just means an AI that does whole jobs instead of answering one question at a time.

You don't learn special prompts to use it. You text it like you'd text a good office manager. Anthropic sums it up in four parts. It comes to you with what needs your attention. It finishes jobs you hand it. It keeps working when you step away. And it checks with you before it acts for you.

The big difference from the regular Claude app is who starts the conversation. In Claude, you open a chat. Duet reaches out to you.

How Claude Duet works

A brief every morning. It reads across your email and calendar and picks out what most needs you that day. It can start on those, like drafting replies for you to look over.

Quiet the rest of the day. It checks in on your apps every few hours and messages you only when something needs you. It also follows up on email threads that went quiet.

Real jobs, not just answers. You can ask it to set up a meeting, build a sales forecast or put together a slide deck. Bigger jobs come back as files you can read and edit.

It works inside the apps you already use. Anthropic names Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign, Calendly and Slack. With Stripe, it can find unpaid invoices and draft the reminders for you.

It shows its work. When it gives you a number, it tells you which email, file or spreadsheet the number came from.

Why business owners will want it

Most of what slips in a small business isn't the big decisions. It's the small stuff that keeps getting pushed to tomorrow.

It's the quote nobody followed up on. It's the invoice that sat unpaid for six weeks because chasing it felt awkward. It's the email from a good customer that got buried under forty newsletters while you were on a roof.

None of it is complicated. It's just one more thing on a day that's already full, and a chatbot can't help, because it only knows what you tell it while you're sitting there typing.

That's the gap Claude Duet is built for. Anthropic's own examples read like an owner's to-do list:

  • "Clear out anything in my inbox that I don't need to read."
  • "Check Stripe for unpaid invoices and draft reminder emails for me to approve."
  • "Pull together a brief on this company before my 2 pm meeting."

The people testing it at Anthropic use it the same way. One talks through his to-do list on walks instead of saving it for his desk. Another hands it her list at the end of the day and has a report waiting that evening. You don't need a desk job for that. You need a phone and a few minutes in the truck.

It asks before it acts, and it can still get things wrong

A tool that reads your email and can send messages in your name should make you careful. That's the right instinct, so here's what's in place and what isn't.

What's in place:

  • It's designed to show you what it's about to do and wait for your okay before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything.
  • It never directly sees your passwords. When a website asks for one, you type it into a separate box on your phone.
  • It refuses to pass along card numbers and government ID numbers.
  • Some things are off limits even if you say yes, like trading stocks or moving money between your accounts.

What can still go wrong:

  • Anthropic says plainly it can misread an email thread or misjudge what's urgent.
  • It checks your apps every few hours, not every second, so something urgent can land in between.
  • Here's the one to understand. An email or a web page can hide instructions written to fool an AI, like a scam email aimed at your assistant instead of you. Anthropic built defenses against that, and says itself that no defense is perfect. That's exactly why you approve everything before it goes out.

Your approval is the last line. Every message it drafts goes out with your name on it once you say yes, so read it the way your customer will.

What it can't do yet

  • It doesn't make phone calls or send text messages to other people. It can send emails, with your approval.
  • It can't read Outlook or Microsoft 365 yet.
  • It can't see the files on your computer.
  • It's US only for now.

If you want to be ready

You can't use it until Anthropic lets you in, and there's no rush. If you do want to be ready when the invite comes, three things help:

  1. Join the waitlist on Anthropic's Claude Duet page, using the same email as your Claude account. A mismatch is the most common reason people don't get in.
  2. Connect your email and calendar to Claude, if you haven't. Duet uses the connections you've already made there.
  3. Decide your lines. Which customers you always handle yourself, and what it should never send without you.

Frequently asked questions

What is Claude Duet? An app from Anthropic where Claude watches your connected apps, sends a morning brief, takes jobs you hand it by message, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything.

How much does Claude Duet cost? Nothing extra during the preview. It comes with Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed yearly) and Max.

Is Claude Duet safe for my business? It asks before every action that matters and never sees your passwords. It can still make mistakes, so read every draft before you approve it.

The bottom line

Claude Duet is built around how a small business owner actually works: out doing the job, not sitting at a desk typing prompts. It won't run your business. You shouldn't want it to. What it can do is catch the small stuff that keeps slipping, write the first draft of the dull jobs, and bring you only the decisions that are yours.

If you're a Skilled Hands member, there's a step-by-step Claude Duet guide waiting for you in the members area under Claude Help.
